Red soles make up the new COMME des GARÇONS x Converse Chuck 70s
CDG PLAY and Converse’s popular collab returns with a new makeover
Red vulcanized soles highlight the classic shoe with the iconic doe-eyed hearts
With various styles already stuck in the minds of fans, COMME des GARÇONS returns with another Converse Chuck 70 rendition. This time, CDG PLAY equips the vulcanized rubber soles with red paint while keeping the classic Black and White canvas base. Rei Kawakubo’s CDG empire never ceases to find new ways to introduce the Chuck 70 time and time again. And each style brings a lot of creativity than the last.
COMME des GARÇONS and Converse perfectly execute how an icon can take on many forms. The popular heart with eyes logo became the main signature detail on the Chuck 70s; but the arrival of new colorways rejuvenates the collab’s long-term popularity every time.
The new collection features four total Converse All Star Chuck 70s; two low-tops and two highs. Two pairs share the all-black canvas and the other in sail white. A classic Chuck Taylor patch on the medial side with the Filip Pagowski doe-eyed heart on the lateral side completes the design.
Contrasting nylon strips on the heel showcase the correlation between the two colorways; the sail white version has a black stripe on the heel, while the black pair featured a white nylon stripe.
Inside the shoe is the usual Converse PLAY CDG sockliner.
Bright red details cover the entirety of the vulcanized sole. Lines on the sides complement each colorway.
All pairs came with white flat laces and a white rubber toe cap. Finishing the new design is the regular gum rubber outsole.
All four versions came out last March 24, 2022 in select retailers both in-stores and online. Each pair sold for $150 USD.
This is the first time where a Converse x CDG Chuck 70 changed the color of the midsole. They usually come in sail white no matter the style. This is a daring challenge for the cobranded shoe as they tried something new.
COMME des GARÇONS x Converse sneakers may be popular to many people, including non-sneakerheads, but the same thing can’t be said when it comes to reselling them. As luxurious and premium as they may seem, CDG x Converse Chuck 70 models don’t really rise in value.
They are usually available on most sneaker retailers and have a lot of pairs in stock. Which barely makes them a target for resellers hoping to get a profit.
Expect these to be near retail or exactly valued at the $150 price tag.
Those hoping to resell can pass on this shoe as it won’t increase in value over time; most likely to sit at retail or even go below retail at times.
Why is the COMME des GARÇONS x Converse All Star Chuck Taylor 70 so popular?
COMME des GARÇONS is no stranger to collabs. In 1999, the Japanese brand first teamed up with Nike for a Nike Zoom Haven collab. It was in 2009 that CDG and Converse debuted the popular doe-eyed heart on the classic pair of Chuck Taylor All Stars.
And then in 2015, the CDG x Converse Chuck 70 debuted; marking what eventually became a long-term partnership headlined by just one classic silhouette.
The first collab features the four-pack collection; two in the classic black colorway and the other two in sail white. The large Filip Pagowski heart adorns the sides, only showing the upper half while the lower area is cut out. With its sudden rise in popularity, CDG and Converse teamed up for more of these styles; playing with the heart in various ways and themes.
The sneakers became mainstream and can be compared with the likes of other classic models. Sneakers like the Air Force 1, Adidas Stan Smith, Superstar, and more are just some of the most popular sneakers revived by their respective brands by bringing back their OG form and at the same time introducing new versions for the modern era.
As for the COMME des GARÇONS x Converse Chuck 70s, the two brands did not add a twist of modernity but rather brought a mix of colors and relocated the hearts on certain colorways. They always came in both High and Low renditions to give more options.
The Converse Chuck 70 can be considered a mainstay among CDG selections as old pairs also restock every now and then.
Will there be more COMME des GARÇONS x Converse Chuck 70 in the future?
With the success it got despite not being really popular in the resell market, the CDG x Converse Chuck 70 will definitely arrive in new versions. Previous renditions of the shoe boasted a wider collection in Volt, Blue, and Pink canvas uppers; there’s also the Grey and Blue pack with the black hearts; as well as the multiple hearts version a few years ago.
While they are not as hyped as they were before, Converse fans are surely waiting for the next big idea. It’s almost always sure that a new CDG x Converse Chuck 70 will arrive; it’s also possible that the brand bring a different model for a change. Either way, the collab will still be one of the best lifestyle choices around. And it’s not going to be as limited as the other brand collabs we’re getting today.
